Kermie and the Muppets

Like millions of people around the world, I too am a die-hard Muppets fan.

By reading Michael Davis’s Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street, I gained a heightened appreciation for Muppet creator Jim Henson and his entourage of talented puppeteers, writers, actors, musicians and producers.

While we primarily associate the colourful Muppets with children and family programming, they bring just as much joy to teens and adults alike. The appeal goes beyond the adult undertones and bonus humour in episodes of “Sesame Street” and “The Muppet Show.”

Not convinced that the intended audience includes grown ups? Muppets have appeared on “Saturday Night Live” and late in the evening Emmy ceremonies. Plus there are special appearance Muppets, who spoof adult celebrities and who children are unlikely to recognize. For example,

Mick Swagger Spamela Hamderson Meryl Sheep Donald Grump Dan Rather-not David Letterguy Squiggy Marley and the Mud Makers Kathie Lee Kathie Moe Cocker Polly Darton Anderson Cucumber BaaBaa Walters Frank Lloyd Left Sir Arthur Conan Rubberducque Billy Idle Jacques Shoesteau Colambo Placido Flamingo Murphy Brownbag The Six Dollar Man Trianglebob Trianglepants and countless others.

Yet the popular Muppets aren’t the spoof ones above.

No, our faves are Grover Kermie Miss Piggy Roosevelt Franklin Animal Gonzo Oscar the Grouch Zoe The Swedish Chef Fozzie Abby Cadabby Snuffleupagus Ernie and Bert Guy Smiley Dr. Teeth Gladys the Cow Rowlf Beaker Fraggles Lips Doozers Prairie Dawn Cookie Monster Sam the Eagle Scooter Zoot Statler and Waldorf Big Bird The Count Grundgetta Clifford The Amazing Mumford Telly Herry Monster Janice Rizzo the Rat Bobo the Bear Sprocket Rosita Barkley Sal Minella Dr. Bunsen Honeydew Elmo

Yes, they’re bright. They’re fuzzy.
They’re loud. They’re funny.
They’re outrageous. They’re endearing.
They’re enduring and we love ‘em.

AWESOME!

  3. My hubby, who isn't much of a Muppets fan, took me to see the new Muppet Movie on my birthday. He didn't enjoy it, but he held my hand and stayed for the entire show. That's true love. That's awesome.
