Little Leaps in Lise Lafontaine's Lofty Life List

I wrote and posted my life list back in August 2011. This list captures my progress on the 60 items from my life list. (Yes, I'm that much of a compulsive listmaker.)

I will copy entries over to this list from my life list as I complete the items or simply to track baby steps on my way to achieving another goal on my life list.

#2 - Help others learn to read
  • I'm a volunteer with the PEI Volunteers for Literacy.
#3 - Get a traditional Polynesian tattoo of a shark  (completed 2012/03/28)
  • Checked this one off my list when we sailed to Kona, Hawaii (The Big Island)
  • Thanks to Tucker, the artist who translated my wishes into reality by inking me with a wicked cool shark. I'll blog about it later and link to a photo.
#9 - Visit Gibraltar (completed 2017/05/02) and the Channel Islands (so close! 2017/05/06)
  • I've booked a 2017 European cruise, so that my mom and I can visit both of these special places with ancestral ties. (2016/09/08).
  • We sailed from Barcelona and Cartagena to Gibraltar, arriving on May 2, 2017. How eerie to walk the kilometres of tunnels within the Rock of Gibraltar, decades after my grandfather served there during the Second World War. I was surprised to find that it rains inside the rock. It's so porous that for days after rainfall outside, water continues to drip on anyone and anything within the tunnels.
Gibraltar's harbour pilot approaches our ship to guide us safely to the port. Damp, moss-covered WWII tunnels built by Canadian and British troops. For nearly a year, my grandfather was stationed here as a Royal Canadian Air Force radar guy, assigned to Britain's Royal Air Force.
  • Damn it! Gale-force winds and high seas caused our ship to cancel our port of call at St. Peter Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands. Even the Gravol anti-nausea meds I had consumed didn't take the edge off of that disappointment. The ship's crew hustled to organize an extra day in France for us and the rest of the passengers. As much as I enjoyed our bonus day in Honfleur, France, Mom and I were crushed to have missed the Channel Islands. As the saying goes, "the best-laid plans..."
#10 - Play two or more "bingos" in a single Scrabble game  (completed 2015/10/19)
  • As I recovered from back surgery, I decided to knock an item off my list. I chose one that didn't require physical dexterity. For those of you who don't play Scrabble, a bingo is when you play all your tiles in a single turn. This means words with at least seven letters (more if you add to an existing word). Even still, scoring two bingos was tough, because my nerve-blocker meds made my brain foggy. Playing online Scrabble for hours on end led me to eventually succeed by opening with MARQUEE and later playing TWEEZERS.
#12 - Learn to sign more than just the letters of the alphabet  (completed 2011/11/23)
  • Started my sign language class on 2011/09/21
  • As of my second class, I now know how to sign numbers, the alphabet, and "small talk"
  • More small talk and a dash of signed music. This is so much fun. I'm thoroughly enjoying my class
  • I have colours, days of the week, states of mind and other stuff to practice now. Lovin' this course.
  • We're rehearsing how to sign Rod Stewart's "I am sailing" song for closing night.
  • Classes end 2011/11/23, so I'll be able to check this off as accomplished on that date. Then, I'll need to keep refreshing my skills and building on what I've learned by using video clips available via YouTube.
  • Check. Yay! (2011/11/23)
  • I'm using my sign language while visiting my nieces. Fun indeed. (2012/01/22)
#13 - Write a life list and share it (completed 2011/08/09)

#14 - Take fencing lessons  (completed 2012/09/13)
  • Today, I found a fencing coach on the Island. Stay tuned. (2012/07/25)
  • Had my first lesson. Hubby joined me. We wore fencing garb and fenced with foils. Peering out of that mask made me feel like the dude from "The Fly" sci-fi flick! (2012/08/10)
  • I've had three lessons now. Still look awkward, but I understand the principles and I'm learning new moves (defence and attack) each week. (2012/08/22)
  • Five private lessons under my belt. Now I can practice with the Canada Games and UPEI fencing clubs, if I choose.
#17 - Swim with one of the biggies (manta ray, whale shark or blue whale)
  • After we booked our 2012 Hawaiian cruise, I read about how certain tour operators take people out to swim with manta rays at night. Most of the tours are for scuba divers, but a few of them are designed specifically for snorkellers. I was psyched!
  • The snorkel tours happen only in Kona, HI, which was one of our stops, but sadly we sailed at 5:30 p.m., well before the evening snorkel expedition. Mike tried to get U.S. Customs permission for us to stay ashore for an extra night (our ship was only sailing to the other side of the same Hawaiian island that night), but sadly the answer was a firm "No!"
  • I snorkelled in two areas of the Hawaiian Islands, but I was in coral reefs and the Mantas prefer deeper, sandier areas. Guess I have a reason to return to HI.
  • The Yucatan presents opportunities to swim with multiple whale sharks. Or, I could snorkel with one in the Atlanta Aquarium. Guaranteed sighting. ;-) I should pack now!
#18 - See Van Halen in concert  (completed 2012/03/22)
  • Purchased tickets to see VH with David Lee Roth. Bring on March 2012!!!
  • Please don't break up, again, before I get to see you at Scotiabank Place.
  • We saw Eddie, Alex, Wolfgang and Diamond Dave from right at the front of the stage. Thanks to Casey for making our seat upgrade possible and to my hubby for spending an incredible VH evening with me.

#20 - Photograph 500 libraries
  • Incredible treasures to be found in libraries around the world and right next door. Today, I hit the 150 mark.(2016/07/15)
  • As of 2017/05/31, I've visited and photographed 175 libraries. Each one impressive in its own right.
#21 - Learn to play cribbage  (completed 2012/04/13)
  • Kim and Shirley, two of my librarian friends, have offered to teach me to play. Now we just have to make time for my lessons.
  • Thanks to Rachelle, I now understand the fundamentals of crib. I can't speed through my hand the way Rachelle and my mom can, but I'll just have to practice more. Read about why this was on my life list.
  • Downloaded the free Cribbage Pro app for my phone. Now I can practice while I wait in line at Sobeys.
  • According to my Cribbage Pro stats, I've won 44% of my games. I even double-skunked my Android opponent once and skunked the competition five times. (2012/05/21)
  • Recently, I played crib in pairs, which was sobering. I need to play games with real people, not my computer, before I can improve my game further. (2013/07/05)
#22 - Swim in every one of the Great Lakes
  • Only Lake Superior remains. I've checked off Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario and Lake Michigan.
#24 - Write for personal purposes, at least twice per week, for two years  (completed 2012/06/10)
  • Since April 2010, I've been writing my Random Ramblings more than twice per week. They started out as email notes, but I began posting them on my blog as of June 2010. Today's post marked my 253rd entry and I have four months to go before I can check this item off my Lofty Life List.  (2012/01/02)
  • I'm just days away from the two-year milestone. While I had a break in my posts in late March and early April, it didn't mean I wasn't writing, I was merely going through a self-induced digital detox
  • Check, I've been blogging online on a regular basis for exactly two years!
#27 - Get slightly more serious about fitness
  • To avoid any back or knee injuries, I've decided to lose some weight before I start exercising more. My friend Shirley will coach me through for my first ever diet. (2011/09/05)
  • My friend Melanie, who completed her first 10K today, has inspired me to get walking and eventually running. (2011/10/08)
  • I'm back to the gym (a.k.a. my torture chamber) at least three times per week. Starting out slowly with my rowing machine and re-introducing some moves from UFIT bootcamp. (2011/11/18)
  • I've lost 18 lbs since Labour Day. Woot! (2011/12/26)
  • Hit the 25-lb mark. It's been a tougher slog these past few weeks while I've been in Ottawa.  (2012/01/26)
  • People are beginning to notice and to compliment me on my progress. I'm rowing again now that I'm back home on the Island.
#29 - Learn to use my SLR flash properly
  • In autumn 2011, I read books on lighting and exposure. Today, I watched a few online tutorials on fill flash. That's a start. Now all I need to do is practice a lot. (2012/01/01)
#31 - Sell a photograph  (completed 2012/06/15)
  • Last summer, I shot photos for my friend Shirley who wanted to rent out her house for the summer months. This June, one of Shirley's best friends hired me to photograph another house. There were more than a dozen photos in all, so I believe it's safe for me to check this item off my Life List. (2012/06/15)
  • Next I'll strive to have someone buy one of my pics for its artistic merit.
#35 - Go on a literary vacation in Europe
  • I happened upon a cool blog called Literary Tourist. You can plan a literary adventure online, even if it will be a long time before I embark on said adventure. (2012/07/25)
  • Given the pricey British pound, I decided to embark on a closer-to-home literary roadtrip. Cindy Goldberg accompanied me to Amherst, Massachusetts, where we saw Shakespeare's First Folio, Emily Dickenson's homestead and the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art.
On my Volvo dash: "The Complete Works of Shakespeare" and a Shakespeare minifig by Lego

Hamlet's "To be or not to be" soliloquy

Everything from "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" to "Where the Wild Things Are"

#36 - Buy a retro muscle car / me-suited car
  • I test drove a 2012 Dodge Challenger today. I've loved the Challenger's retro look ever since Dodge previewed it at the Detroit Auto Show years ago. The Hemi sounded great and the ride surprised me in some positive ways, but my heart didn't race faster than the car, so I take that to mean it isn't the muscle car for me. (2012/03/08)
  • I've decided that as much as I love the look of muscle cars, I would feel irresponsible if I were to own and drive such an inefficient, monster of a car. Instead, I'm going to make sure that my next car fits my personality. I've taken MINIs for test drives. I'm thinking a custom MINI with the Baker Street package. Bright purple with contrasting roof, mirror caps, rims and a light interior. Hmmmm, maybe by the time I'm ready for my next car, MINI will even have electric versions available in North America.  (2016/06/04)
#37 - Inspire someone to write a life list
  • Six people who read my blog told me that I've inspired them to write a life list. I'm not going to cross this off as completed until I actually hear that one of those who was inspired has actually written a list. (2011/08/09)
  • Okay, I'm still waiting to hear if any of you followed through on writing a life list. Let me know here on the blog, by email, in person or by phone. I'd like to know if anyone was inspired enough to do it. Thanks. (2011/12/26)
#39 - Get a wild haircut or colouring  (completed 2013/12/10)
  • I purchased copper hair dye and Rachelle coloured my hair for me on Thanksgiving weekend. This wouldn't count as wild colouring by most people's standards, but for a conservative hair woman like me this was a BIG step. Thanks, sis! (2011/10/14)
  • Think I may need to go bigger before I can cross this off my list. Ideas anyone?
  • I have a plan. My hairdresser thinks my hair will be long enough by fall 2013, so stay tuned.
  • Did it. I have dark purple streaks throughout. My hair isn't quite long enough for an ombre-style with varied shades of purple. See photos in #62 below (2013/12/10)
  • My blonde bangs now make the dark purple pop even more than ever. The blonde frames my face and is softer for my complexion. Love my purple do! (2015/03/02)
#40 - Meet Lenny Kravitz, Hugh Jackman or Jon Bon Jovi  (completed 2013/02/20)
  • When I added #40 to my list, I was aiming high, but I didn't believe I'd ever get close to any of these talented heartthrobs. Bon Jovi 's 2013 Because We Can tour afforded me the best chance I think I'll ever get to "meet" one of the boys.
  • No stops for Bon Jovi in Atlantic Canada meant I needed to drive to the next closest venue: Montréal or Ottawa. After picking up decent 200-level tickets for the Ottawa show, I figured that was as good as it would get. I couldn't have been more wrong. The day before the concert a colleague (Liz rocks!) hooked me up with tickets for the centre aisle in the pit, seats within the Bon Jovi stage.
  • Yes, I felt like an 18-year-old teen when Jon touched my hand (a sideways high-five) on his way up to the outer stage to perform ballads. In my books that counts as meeting him. See pics and more info.
#41 - Write my will (completed 2017/04/19)
  • At last, both Mike and I finished writing our wills. Sad to say, it took trips to high-alert security areas of Europe to convince us that the time was right.
  • I feel old.
#42 - Visit 50% of Canada's national parks [50% = 21 parks as of 07/2011]
  1. Cape Breton Highlands (2005, 2007, 2008, 2009)
  2. Fundy (2001)
  3. Georgian Bay Islands (late 1970s to early 1980s)
  4. Kouchibougouac  (2013)
  5. Point Pelee  (1990s)
  6. Prince Edward Island (2006, 2007–2016)
  7. Thousand Islands  (1990s)

I looooove that these red Muskoka chairs are cropping up at Canada's national parks.

A pair of Parks Canada red Muskoka chairs on a rocky outcrop at Les Escoumins, north of Tadoussac, QC.
#44 - Go on a birding vacation (completed 2017/05/03)
  • During my European escapade to celebrate Mom's 70th, we had a full day in Lisbon, Portugal. Mom wasn't keen to see anything in particular, so I booked us a birding adventure with Birds & Nature Tours Portugal. Maria João Rainho and Bernardo Barreto run an impressive business. Maria was a fantastic guide and Bernardo made sure that all our needs were met.
  • Maria picked us up at our ship and drove us to the Tagus Estuary. We spent the day exploring the shore, fields, abandoned buildings, farms (with permission) and nature preserves. By 6 p.m., I had logged 58 species, including 49 first-time birds for my list. Score! My favourites were the tropical-looking Bee-eaters and the Spoonbills.
  • I would still like to take a vacation focused entirely on birds, but this tour fit the bill for me for now.
A pair of Bee-eaters rest on a wire.

 #50 - Zipline across a valley (completed 2016/08/06)
I zip lined across Montmorency Falls, Parc de la Chute Montmorency, Quebec. My exhilarating zip carried me 310 metres across the top of the falls, which cascade down 83 metres, which according to park staff is 33 metres higher than Niagara's Horseshoe Falls. Back in 2013, I had booked Groupon tickets for a 1.5-hour adventure to zipline across a the Saint John River gorge and Grand Falls valley. Unfortunately, my ticket expired before I was able to get to New Brunswick. So, I wasn't about to pass up the experience while we vacationed in Quebec.
